Background of the Study
Desertification is an escalating environmental concern that threatens agricultural productivity and food security in many regions. In Ogbomosho North Local Government Area, Oyo State, the gradual encroachment of desert-like conditions has led to a marked decline in soil fertility and water retention capacity (Afolabi, 2023). Farmers are increasingly challenged by erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and soil degradation, all of which contribute to reduced crop yields and compromised livelihoods (Olayinka, 2024). The process of desertification not only diminishes arable land but also exacerbates poverty and food insecurity among rural communities. Previous studies have highlighted the correlation between climatic changes and the acceleration of desertification processes, underscoring the need for sustainable agricultural practices and effective land management strategies (Balogun, 2025). This study appraises the direct and indirect effects of desertification on farming activities, emphasizing the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern agricultural techniques. By examining local adaptation strategies, the research seeks to provide recommendations that can mitigate the adverse impacts of desertification on agricultural productivity and rural development (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Farmers in Ogbomosho North are facing severe challenges due to desertification, which has led to diminished soil quality and unpredictable crop performance. The continuous spread of arid conditions hampers agricultural productivity and threatens food security (Olayinka, 2024). Ineffective land management practices and inadequate adaptation measures further intensify these issues. This study aims to investigate the extent to which desertification affects farming activities and to identify the key factors that contribute to declining agricultural outputs, thereby highlighting the need for sustainable interventions (Balogun, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of desertification on soil fertility and crop yields.
To identify the adaptive strategies employed by local farmers.
To recommend sustainable farming practices to combat desertification.
Research Questions:
How does desertification affect soil quality in Ogbomosho North?
What adaptive measures are currently in use by farmers?
What sustainable practices can be adopted to mitigate desertification effects?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Desertification significantly reduces soil fertility in the study area.
H2: Current adaptation strategies are insufficient in countering the negative impacts on agriculture.
H3: Implementation of sustainable farming practices improves crop yield.
Significance of the Study
This study provides crucial insights into the effects of desertification on agriculture, offering evidence-based recommendations for sustainable farming practices. The findings will support policymakers and local farmers in developing effective adaptation strategies, ensuring improved agricultural productivity and enhanced food security (Afolabi, 2023; Olayinka, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the impact of desertification on farming activities in Ogbomosho North Local Government Area, Oyo State. The study does not extend to other environmental factors affecting agriculture.
Definitions of Terms:
Desertification: The process by which fertile land degrades into desert due to various factors.
Soil Fertility: The capacity of soil to support plant growth by providing essential nutrients.
Adaptation Strategies: Methods adopted to adjust to environmental changes and mitigate adverse effects.
